The U3A of Guernsey’s Pastel Group Exhibition
The National Trust of Guernsey’s Art at the Park Gallery is delighted to be hosting the U3A’s Pastel Group exhibition over the Christmas season.
“We feel it is very important to support local education, in all its incarnations, and to offer the opportunity for new and amateur artists to be given the chance to exhibit their work.”
Founded in 1982, the U3A organisation was originally called the “University of the Third Age”, but today is known simply as U3A. There are over 1,000 U3As in the UK involving around 400,000 members in exploring new ideas, skills, interests and activities together. U3A Guernsey was launched in November 2015 and has already grown to more than 1,000 members.
The U3A pastel group here in Guernsey was formed in 2019, and over that time, has settled into a pattern of meeting indoors in the winter months, and spending as many sessions as possible in the summer ‘en plein air’. The group has been developing their skills in depicting still-life, and also the glories of the Guernsey land and seascape.
Some have already had a mix of artistic experience, others were starting from scratch, not having touched any art materials since school. This is the first time any of the group have participated in a public exhibition.
The exhibition opens this Friday 14 November, and runs until Friday 19 December.
Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday 10am until 4:30pm.
The Gallery has free entry and is accessible-friendly. Please be aware that the Folk and Costume Museum will be closed during this time, and that the final day will close at 2pm.

THEATRICAL SPECTACLES – THE PRECURSOR OF THE MODERN MUSICAL
The Arts Society Guernsey presents ’Theatrical Spectacles – the precursor of the modern musical’, with lecturer Charles Tracy.
During the second half of the 19th century, flamboyant Theatrical Spectacles became much loved by the public, notably in the USA. The lecture will look at this phenomenon and two of its foremost exponents, the Kiralfy brothers. Along the way there were rows, elephants, prima donnas, gondolas and bankruptcies.
Charles is Programme Secretary; the elder of the Kiralfy brothers is his great-grandfather. For someone who was as well-known as, say, Cameron Macintosh or Andew Lloyd Webber, it is remarkable that no one thought to produce his biography. Charles has drawn together private family papers and a limited amount of published information to remedy this defect.
Doors at Les Cotils open at 6pm for complimentary drinks and the lecture is from 7pm to 8pm. Entrance is free to members and non-members £15 at the door if space permits. More details on the Arts Society website : theartssocietyguernsey.gg or email : contact@theartssocietyguernsey.gg
This lecture is part of the Arts Society Guernsey’s education initiative in partnership with the Guernsey Institute.
Paul Walker and Karen Pfeiffer at The Guernsey Folk Club
The Guernsey Folk Club are delighted to present an evening with Paul Walker and Karen Pfeiffer, next Wednesday 19 at Les Rocquettes Hotel.

Karen’s natural theatricality and life affirming playful energy compliments charmingly with Paul’s calm geniality and combined they magically turn a great performance into a real event.”
Support will come from a few of the Guernsey Folk Club’s regular performers!
Doors open at 7:30pm, and music will start at 7:45pm.
No admission charge but discretionary donations will be welcomed.
Hope you can join for this special evening!
