New plans have been submitted to split the former Auberge restaurant from one residence into two.

The applicant, Andrew Haining via the Petit Port Pension Scheme, is seeking permission to subdivide and extend the building to create two dwellings on the site known as The Auberge on Jerbourg Road.

It comes after consent was given by Planning last April to demolish and replace the existing building.

Planning had previously agreed in January 2022 that the Auberge restaurant could be converted into a larger dwelling, with consent given to change the roofing and increase the floor space in October 2023.

Now, the hope is for a Unit A and a Unit B to have two bedrooms each, with the submitted plans adding 68 square metres to the buildings’ footprint which is in line with the previously approved size for a building.

Parking spaces would be doubled from four to eight under the plans.

The development of the Auberge has provoked public and political backlash throughout this decade.

Mr Haining bought the site in 2018 while it was still a restaurant but closed it within months and successfully applied for a change of use after claiming the view from the site was no longer exceptional and the restaurant was surplus to the island’s requirements.

A public petition opposing its change of use was set up gaining over 1,600 signatures, and a Deputy queried why an open planning meeting was not requested by the political members of the Development & Planning Authority given public opposition to the plans.
