Two homeowners will be left suffering the ‘no longer exceptional views’ from the site of the former Auberge restaurant at Jerbourg after the current owner was given permission to build two properties there.

Andrew Haining via the Petit Port Pension Scheme, bought the former restaurant in 2018 and closed it months later, before getting planning permission to knock down and replace the building with a house in 2021.

Last year he asked for permission to subdivide and extend the building to create two dwellings.

That has now been approved, giving the go ahead for two two-bedroom properties on the site, which Mr Haining infamously described as “no longer having exceptional views” in comparison to other restaurants in the island.

The development of the Auberge has provoked public and political backlash throughout this decade.

A public petition opposing its change of use was set up gaining over 1,600 signatures, and a Deputy queried why an open planning meeting was not requested by the political members of the Development & Planning Authority given public opposition to the plans.

No one opposed the latest planning application and permission was given in June, with conditions including that the work must start within three years, must be “in character with its surroundings”, and numerous environmental considerations.
