The King has appointed a new Dean of the Bailiwick of Guernsey.
The Venerable Matthew Trick will succeed the Very Reverend Tim Barker who has been the Dean since 2015.
Mr Trick said he was “deeply honoured by the trust placed in me” and was looking forward to “serving the people, churches and communities of the Bailiwick of Guernsey”.
The Dean of the Bailiwick of Guernsey is the most senior Anglican priest who oversees the Church of England’s presence in the islands.
Mr Trick has also been appointed as Vicar of St Peter’s church in Sark where he will maintain a regular presence.
Previously a bank manager, Mr Trick was ordained as a deacon in 2008 and a priest in 2009.
He has previously served as Deanery youth officer in the Vale of Glamorgan, Priest in Charge in the Diocese of Ely and the vicar in the Parish of Ringwood.
Committed to Jesus and the Bailiwick
He was the Locum Priest in Alderney during the summers of 2023 and 2024.
He added: “My family and I know and love the islands through our time on Alderney and visits across the Bailiwick.
“I am committed to serving the whole Bailiwick, listening well, building relationships and supporting the mission and ministry of the Church in every island community.
“The church has a vital role to play in making Jesus known, nurturing hope, serving local communities and contributing to the common good.
“I look forward to working with churches, civic leaders, charities, schools and community partners to support the wellbeing and flourishing of the whole Bailiwick.”
From Derby to donkey
Mr Tick previously served as the Archdeacon of Derby City and South Derbyshire, and Residentiary Canon of Derby Cathedral since 2022.
He will be moving from Derby to the Bailiwick when he is installed as Dean in September by acting Bishop of Salisbury, the Right Reverend Karen Gorham.
Bishop Gorham said: “I am delighted with the news that Matthew will be the next Dean of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, and I look forward to welcoming him into the life of the Salisbury diocese and sharing with him in ministry.”
Sir Richard Cripwell, the Lieutenant Governor, said: “I am looking forward to welcoming Matthew to the Bailiwick. Having previously spent time in Alderney he already knows what a special place the Bailiwick is and how important the role of the church is within it.”
