Consultant cardiologist Dr Dean Patterson is fighting a suspension by the General Medical Council after being sacked by the MSG, in circumstances linked with a mystery review into the covid vaccination programme.

Dr Patterson had been a Partner at the Medical Specialist Group, having worked in the island for 20-years, but in a statement issued today, the MSG said he has not been involved in patient care for just over a year and he has not been a Partner since last week.

The MSG said: “the safety and quality of care that we provide to our patients is our absolute priority” and that “every decision we have taken throughout this process has been focused on ensuring the highest standards of patient care”.

Dr Patterson was an outspoken critic of the island’s response to the covid pandemic and has previously raised concerns about the safety of the covid vaccination programme.

In a statement issued today, the MSG referenced the vaccines and said a review had been commissioned by the States to look into possible links between the vaccine and cardiac conditions observed by Dr Patterson in his patients.

The MSG said the “independent review by the Royal College of Physicians” was commissioned by the States of Guernsey “following clinical concerns raised by Dr Patterson”.

The MSG said the review, which was commissioned in December 2024/January 2025 was intended to “investigate a possible link between COVID-19 vaccination and cardiac conditions observed within his (Dr Patterson’s) practice”.

The MSG said: “The review found no evidence to support the level of clinical concerns raised by Dr Patterson”.

Express has asked both the MSG and the States of Guernsey for more details about this review, who wrote it, and to see a copy of it. The MSG has said that is for HSC to respond on. HSC has not yet done so.

The MSG also confirmed today that Dr Patterson has been suspended for 12-months by the General Medical Council while it investigates his ‘fitness to practice’.

Dr Patterson is appealing the suspension and is believed to be fighting the ongoing proceedings against him.

“The investigation by the GMC is ongoing, and it is important that this process is allowed to run its proper course,” said the MSG.

In the same statement, the MSG said Dr Patterson is no longer a Partner at the organisation “following the conclusion of our internal processes”.

In response to questions from Express, the MSG confirmed that decision was made “collectively by the partnership” and that Dr Peter Rabey – the island’s Medical Director of Health and Social Care – was involved in the decision.

“The decision that Dr Patterson should no longer be a partner at the Medical Specialist Group was taken collectively by the partnership. Dr Peter Rabey is not a member of the Medical Specialist Group, he was only involved in any decisions within the scope of his statutory role as the Responsible Officer,” confirmed the MSG.

Dr Patterson’s patients have been notified of the change in circumstances at the MSG, it said. They are all believed to have been assigned to different consultants.

“Our cardiology service has two highly experienced consultants, one substantive and one locum who has been covering Dr Patterson’s absence since February 2025,” the MSG told Express. “Patients have received the expert and committed treatment they deserve.”

The MSG was also clear that “the safety and quality of care that we provide to our patients is our absolute priority”.

“If any patient has questions or concerns about their Cardiology care from Dr Patterson, they can contact the MSG Customer Care team by emailing customercare@msg.gg or calling 01481 238565 and we will review and address their concerns.”

Express is waiting for a response to a number of questions from HSC around the review, and the wider situation involving Dr Patterson.
