Guernsey Police are urging victims to come forward to report any sexual crimes in the island.

Detective Inspector Ian Tanner from the Public Protection Unit was speaking after the Royal Court sentenced a man to 15 years and 5 months for sexual crimes against 10 victims.

Ben Spruce had admitted some of the crimes, and was found guilty of others, against eight girls and two boys, all under the age of 16.

“We strongly encourage anyone who has experienced these types of crimes to come forward and report them to the police,” said DI Tanner after Spruce (20) had been sentenced for his crimes, covering a range of sexual offences involving children.

“You will be fully supported throughout the investigation and any subsequent court proceedings, by our officers and dedicated partner agencies.

“Our officers are committed to relentlessly pursuing those who seek to exploit young people in our community, working tirelessly to secure convictions. Along with this, our partners in Health & Social Care, Education, and the third sector work tirelessly to support young people who have been victim to these horrific crimes.”

Spruce had used social media channels like SnapChat to initiate sexual conversations with multiple children, requesting sexual images and he also sent his victims indecent images of himself.

“Anyone who has any concerns regarding internet and social media safety is encouraged to speak to our digital Safety and Development Officer who regularly delivers inputs to children for online safety along with advice to parents. They can be reached through the police switchboard on 01481 222 222,” said DI Tanner.

The “complex investigation” was undertaken by the Guernsey Police Public Protection Unit, said DI Tanner.

This involved “working closely with our partner agencies, including Education and charities such as Victim Support and Witness Service, to ensure that all victims and children affected were offered full and appropriate support”.

He went on to say that specialist support and advice in Guernsey can be accessed by calling 01481 223182 or emailing MultiAgencySupportHub@gov.gg
