The briefing has been called as the number of known active cases of infection jumped to 1,541 late yesterday afternoon after another 987 cases were found in the past three days of testing.
This means that in the period spanning 24 December to 29 December just over 2,000 people – nearly one in 30 of the population – were under a legal requirement to isolate.
In the same period, another person died with covid-19 and the number of patients in hospital with the virus increased to five.
In total, there have been 7,402 known cases of covid-19 in the Bailiwick since the first case in March 2020.
The Medical Officer of Health, Dr Nicola Brink, said two weeks ago that the Bailiwick would be unable to prevent “a tidal wave of omicron” cases of covid-19.
The States said yesterday: “We are currently in an omicron wave. This is the dominant strain. As such, Public Health will no longer prioritise sequencing while it focuses on managing case numbers effectively.”
It is not yet clear whether the States will announce any new directions or guidance at today’s briefing.
The media are invited to join the briefing remotely.
