£7.5m will be spent on refurbishments, while a further £1.7m will be spent repurposing the former swimming pool area to accommodate Music Centre, the Youth Commission and Sexual Health and Relationship Education.
Director of Education Nick Hynes says most of the upgrades are for “the replacement of all external windows and doors and windowsills, accessibility works, and the replacement of heating and mechanical systems in the building.
“It is important to note that most of the windows on this site which has circa 10,000m2 of floor area are now close to 40 years old, having been installed in 1985.”
He said the concrete windowsills are “crumbling” with many of the windows already “failing”.
The new glass will be to an improved double-glazed specification to improve heat retention, sound leakage, and security.
“To be clear, this expenditure is about the ongoing maintenance of the building, which has needed investment,” Mr Hynes added.
