The national newspaper put a focus on VisitGuernsey’s new campaign promising flight-free island hopping, and said the Bailiwick offered something different to other holiday destinations, more akin to the Aegean than anything Anglican.

The article itself puts more focus on Alderney, Sark and Herm than Guernsey itself, regarding the main island is best known for its ‘famous cream and Wehrmacht occupation’. It also contentiously said Jersey ‘arguably’ had better beaches. 

But the article claimed that the countless beaches and walking trails across each of the islands should not be missed by UK tourists. 

“[Guernsey] has been rebranded to include offshore assets Alderney, Sark and Herm, and is presenting itself as 2020’s island-hopping alternative to the Aegean,” it said.

“Start with Alderney, an hour from Guernsey aboard the new Spike Islander Ferry. The third largest Channel Island is a destination for beach lovers, birdwatchers and walkers – there are more than 50 miles of trails. […].

“Next, the anomaly of Sark. Having worked there in the 1980s, I can testify to the eccentricity; an island of two square miles with a population of 500, ruled by a medieval overlord, or seigneur. Cars are banned, as are overflights. […].”

Finally, the article describes Herm has having sand that starts at the Jetty, and wraps around the island. 

As the article states, this new focus on island-hopping is all part of VisitGuernsey’s new ‘The Islands of Guernsey’ strategy, which was launched earlier this winter. It put the focus on the unique opportunity the Bailiwick presents for people wanting to visit more than one place, without the hassle of travel. 

Guernsey is only topped by Sri Lanka, which comes in at number one on the Sunday Times’ list.
