A still from a movie which shows nuns kneeling by an altar with one nun stood facing the camera with her head at an angle

Clameur Du Cinema is returning for one night only on Monday 23 November with a screening of Ken Russell’s ‘The Devils’, in a brand-new 4K restoration of the controversial British classic.

The film focuses on Father Grandier (Oliver Reed), a 17th-century French priest whose unorthodox views attract a passionate following in the walled town of Loudun, including the nun Sister Jeanne (Vanessa Redgrave).

When the power-hungry Cardinal Richelieu realises he must eliminate Grandier to gain control of Loudun, he spearheads a public outcry to destroy the once-loved priest’s reputation.

Wynter Tyson, the founder of Clameur Du Cinema (2017–2024), said: “Over the past decade, I’ve screened almost 120 films covering a wide variety of genres and tastes, but the one wish-list movie that I was never able to book was The Devils.

“The release of this restoration finally offers the chance to screen this vitally important piece of British Cinema history, and bringing Clameur Du Cinema back for this one night only event feels like the perfect belated postscript to a wonderful run of screenings.”

The new 4K restoration is being presented as the first release of ‘The Devils’ in its originally intended form.

It will screen at the Mallard Cinema on Monday 23 November at 19:00.
