The warning has been made after 52 incidents of uncontrolled dogs reported to the police during the last year.

Guernsey Police said every single one of these incidents has led to people either being injured, or there being a near miss, or livestock being killed or injured. 

The Police said: “The old adage of ‘a dog is a man’s best friend’ could not be truer to the police service, where our working dogs are very much part of the policing family.  

“We are also very aware that the vast majority of dog owners are responsible and ensure their dogs are under control avoiding any harm coming to their dog and also avoiding their dogs coming into conflict. 

“However, Guernsey Police has a responsibility to keep the public safe, so those who fail to control their dogs can expect officers to deal with those offences robustly and, where the circumstances demand it, pursue a prosecution.
