Dora is a rescue dog who was brought to Guernsey from Romania, where she endured a difficult life. Soon after being placed with a foster family, Dora escaped while on a walk and was missing for nearly two weeks.

When she arrived in Guernsey with the charity Stray Safe Guernsey, Dora was found to have several tumours which needed operations. The charity, which is run by Tracey Gallienne, is covering the costs.

Supporter Sara Clarke set up a JustGiving page to meet the £1260 costs of the veterinary bills. By the following day, it had exceeded its targets thanks to the support of 55 donors. Miss Clarke said that additional donations would be paid to Stray Safe Guernsey.

Dora’s foster family had her only for a short time when the nervous dog got away during a walk. She disappeared near Amherst school on 13 January. She was seen as far away as Talbot Valley before being rescued by the GSPCA at Chouet on 24 January.

While Dora was missing, there were numerous sightings of her, but the GSPCA had asked people not to approach her as she was known to be anxious and was liable to run away and hide again.

GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne said they were using special techniques to try and coax her out of any hiding places.

After Dora was successfully returned to her foster family, she was checked over by a vet again with all those costs also covered by Stray Safe Guernsey.

Through her JustGiving campaign, Ms Clarke said that additional funds raised over the £1260 target for Dora will support other rescue dogs and help pay towards their vet bills, food, bedding and other essentials “until they find their forever homes”.
