New stamps featuring some of Guernsey’s most electrifying sea-life have been released this week.

The six stamps each feature a different species of jellyfish that are found in Guernsey’s waters.

From the common Bluefire Jellyfish shown on the 75p stamp to the striking appearances of the Mauve Stinger (£1.54), the new collection aims to give “a fascinating glimpse” into these ancient creatures.

Having existed for more than 500 million years, the jellyfish is one of the most highly adapted predators in the world’s oceans. Their rising numbers around Guernsey’s coastline indicate broader environmental change caused by rising sea temperatures.

Bridget Yabsley, Head of Philatelic at Guernsey Post, said: “Jellyfish are an important part of the marine ecosystem and we hope this issue will inspire collectors and nature enthusiasts alike to take a closer interest in the extraordinary marine life that surrounds our islands.”

The images used on the stamps were captured by Sark-based photographer, Sue Daly.

Mrs Yabsley said that her photography captured “the delicate beauty and unique characteristics of each jellyfish in remarkable detail.”
