st Peter port question marks

While votes to enhance La Vallette’s existing kiosk easily beat the other suggestions of creating a wellness centre there or improving the pool facilities, the wider area could be used for sport or recreation purposes under the plans which now need to be developed further.

The Vivier bunker, behind the old slaughterhouse, could be used as an entertainment venue in the future, while the most popular opinion for the future use of the old States offices, currently the Information Centre, is as an arts venue.

The prominent sea front building could also be redeveloped as a hotel or for recreation purposes depending on what a judging panel decides from the shortlisted ideas.

General idea for redeveloping the seafront include calls for improved transport and movement of people around the key areas, while the North Plantation should have its current green spaces enhanced further according to the recent public poll.

The public also voted in favour of using the Round Top Stores on the Crown Pier as a food facility.

The work to redevelop the areas is under the remit of the Seafront Enhancement Area Steering Group which was created last year to look at ways of improving under utilised areas in town.

They are planning to announce the successful proposals for these initial projects this spring, after spending the last six months finding out what the public want.

More than 350 ideas were submitted by members of the public and 35 ‘firm expressions of interest were received’ – those have then been shortlisted with the most popular ideas detailed.

A Steering Group spokesperson said: “We are looking forward to seeing the final presentations from the 15 shortlisted expressions of interest before deciding which should be progressed for each of the six sites. We’re still on track to see work begin this year on at least one of those sites.

“At this stage we will be assessing the value of the enhancement and the deliverability of the proposals and will share the detail of these once the Steering Group has heard from those submitting the shortlisted expressions of interest.”
