Fresh efforts to encourage the use of Guernsey French include plans to teach children the language through play.

A brainchild of the Guernsey Language Commission, the new ‘Let’s Play in Guernesiais!’ scheme is launching this week. The idea is that parents and teachers will also learn through playing with the children.

The programme includes a set of free films and learning materials designed to help children, teachers, and families enjoy Guernesiais.

Developed by Anita Wood; Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of Exeter, and Yan Marquis; Guernesiais teacher and translator, ‘Faout jouaï en Guernesiais!’ focuses on learning through play, curiosity, and communication with demonstrations on how to play games such as ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf?’ and ‘Rock, paper, scissors’ using the local language.

“This is a real step forward for our language,” said Sir Richard Collas, Chair of the Guernsey Language Commission.

“These materials make Guernesiais accessible and enjoyable for everyone. They will help our youngest islanders hear, use, and value their language – an important part of Guernsey’s cultural identity.”

The videos and resources have all been designed for teachers, parents, and grandparents – especially those with little or no prior knowledge of Guernesiais.

Ms Wood hopes anyone who is interested in learning the language will feel encouraged to explore what is on offer.

“Language learning brings so many benefits to both children and adults,” said Anita Wood. “Imagine every child in Guernsey confidently playing a few playground games in Guernesiais – that early confidence can inspire lifelong interest and pride in our local language.

“It’s been wonderful to see how quickly children pick up Guernesiais when it’s part of a game,” added Yan Marquis. “The laughter and enthusiasm in the playground show that language learning is fun – we need to give it space to be used.”

The scheme was trialled at Amherst and Blanchelande earlier this year and is now being rolled out island wide, with two events this week for anyone wanting to learn to play the games or learn how to teach them to others.

A community event is being held at St Saviour’s Community Centre this evening between 18:00 and 19:00. Parents, grandparents and youth workers are all welcome to attend.

A teacher training event is being held at St Martin’s Community Centre tomorrow, between 17:00 and 18:00 for school staff including Headteachers, Early Years, KS1and KS2 teachers, and LSAs.
