Mr Molony, who has appeared in Derry Girls and Ripper Street, said: “John Nettles has left an incredible legacy with big shoes to fill, and I hope I can bring a fresh new take on this iconic character. I can’t wait for audiences to join me on this journey”.
The new six-episode series – commissioned by BBC-owned broadcaster UKTV – will be directed by Peaky Blinders director Colm McCarthy.
Other cast members include Zoe Wanamaker (My Family and Harry Potter), who will play the role of Jim’s mother-in-law Charlie Hungerford in a change from the original series, alongside Philip Glenister (Life on Mars) as Arthur Wakefield.
Bergerac is being produced by BlackLight TV, part of Banijay UK, and Jersey-based Westward Studios with support from Visit Jersey. The series is being written by Toby Whithouse – who has contributeD to Doctor Who – alongside Brian Fillis, Catherine Tregenna, and Polly Buckle.
