The vote on whether to introduce Policy and Resources’ (P&R) new tax policy – including GST – will go ahead this week after an attempt to delay it failed.
The delaying motion – called a sursis motivé – was narrowly defeated on Wednesday afternoon, with 22 votes against it and 17 in favour.
Deputy Liam McKenna and Deputy Mark Helyar had wanted to delay the vote until the 20,000-strong tax backlog was resolved and the Chief Resourcing Officer could compile a report on the States finances – with a cut off of July 2028.
The States will now turn to debating the mammoth 22 amendments that have been put forward by deputies, with that debate expected to continue on Thursday.
