The GSPCA has rescued another sick seal pup – the third of the year, as the charity faces a challenging time in housing them during their rehabilitation.
Head of Marine Mammals for the charity, Geoff George said he was called out to the Chouet headland after the sick seal pup was spotted.
He said the seal was “just over 20kgs, half of the weight it should be for its age”.
Mr George said the seal has been called ‘Dark Horse’ and is joining the other recently rescued seals; Swish and Fireworks.
“It is not easy caring for such sick seal pups when they arrive needing 24-hour care and without us these pups wouldn’t be alive today,” he added.
The GSPCA‘s mission is to prevent cruelty to all animals, to rescue animals in distress, to provide shelter for strays and to foster and encourage kindness and consideration in the treatment of animals whether domestic or wild.
GSPCA manager Steve Byrne said this includes seal pups who need intensive care during their long time in rehabilitation.
“It is not easy caring for such sick seal pups when they arrive needing 24-hour care and without us these pups wouldn’t be alive today,” he said.

Mr Byrne said the most recent rescue has come at a challenging time as the charity is about to start building work on its much anticipated new facilities.
He said some of the charity’s current buildings have started to come down and the area used for marine wildlife will soon follow.
The charity has asked for help from the RSPCA in the UK, but the larger organisation said it was unable to at this time.
The GSPCA also made pleas to locals to supply swimming pool facilities to support the seal rehabilitation process.
