The States’ said that both food waste and mild winter temperatures are probable causes.
Express understands that there has been an increase in rat sightings in recent weeks, with a reader pointing out they had seen “hundreds” of rat holes and sometimes rats “being chased out of nearby takeaways”.
The North Plantation is located in-between the Tourist Information Centre and the Thomas de la Rue pub, and features multiple nightclubs, bars, restaurants, and takeaways nearby.

The States of Guernsey claimed they are aware of the issue and are working to remediate it. The problem was also noted as being the responsibility of multiple public service area providers.
“We are aware of the situation and have been implementing further controls in response. We encourage food retailers in the area to take all practical steps to prevent food being left in the street overnight as it attracts rats,” said the States’.
“It is likely that their numbers are also higher as a result of a very mild winter.”
