Haunted castles, costume contests, and live music are amongst the halloween festivities this weekend. If scary celebrations aren’t your style, we’ve got you covered with exhibitions, music competitions, and even a record fair.

Haunted Castle: Folklore and Familiars

Head down to Castle Cornet this weekend for some spooktacular fun for the whole family.

Taking place on the 28 and 29 of October, you’ll have an opportunity to learn about bats with La Société Bat Section, delve into some self-hosted crafts, create some spooky decorations and play some gruesome games.

Musical storytelling, animal trails, folklore living History are also among the activities Guernsey Museums have to offer. Castle Cornet is open from 10:00 until 17:00 daily, with activities running from 10:30 until 16:00. Normal admission applies. Entry is free for discovery pass holders.

Halloween at St James

This year, St James’ big Halloween Party will take you across the dark mountains and wild forests to the home of Dracula himself: Transylvania.

Join us as we awaken our gothic castle to the sounds of Balkan delights. Let’s block out the sun and dance ’til we raise the dead with the international legends The Turbans, the raucous Bethlehem Casuals and the dame of the night herself; hot springs.”

Headliner, The Turbans, are an international band who draw inspiration from all over the world into their unique and ‘visually arresting’ performances. Their aim is to bring music to the people, young and old alike, mixing vibrant spontaneity and authenticity with multi-genre instrumental and vocal excellence. Complimenting The Turbans’ entrancing sound are the ‘raucous’ Bethlehem Casuals, who bring an eclectic mix of jazz, psych, rock to the stage.

This event will be taking place on Saturday 28 October, with music kicking off at 20:00. Fancy dress is of course encouraged, so get dressed in your eeriest attire, grab a drink and enjoy.

Halloween with Henrietta @ Writer’s Block

Head down to Writer’s Block in the Commercial Arcade on 28 October to meet the author of The Adventures of Henrietta Hedgekin. Not only is this event in a great location to grab a spot of lunch first, you will also have the opportunity to enjoy a book signing, costume contest, lots of halloween treats and a reading of a special Henrietta Hedgekin Halloween story.

Where Art and Activism Meet – supported by Guernsey Arts

Head down to the Digital Greenhouse next Thursday to delve into the interesting and vital relationship between activism and the arts, brought to you by artist and one of Extinction Rebellion’s key action planners, Andy Smith. 

In this talk, Guernsey born Andy will discuss where art and protest meet and how his own work has influenced his activism and vice-versa:Art has the ability to raise awareness and to tell stories; art can reflect back at us the world we live in, oftentimes with greater clarity or nuance.

VEF Record Fair 2023

The Vale Earth Fair are back with their amazing annual record fair. Head down to the Styx Centre on Sunday 29 October to explore the various stalls and abundance of vinyl, CDs and cassettes and music merch.

As well as having the chance to explore new artists and secure some of your favourite albums on vinyl, the afternoon will be accompanied by the sounds of live music, and include tea, coffee, cakes and snacks. This event is free admission, but why not help the VEF collective to hold many more fabulous events like this by making a donation.

Moor Theatre presents: William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet

“Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona, where we lay our scene, from ancient grudge break to new mutiny, where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.”

The talented Moor Theatre will return to Holy Trinity Church Guernsey next week with one of Shakespeare’s best known plays; Romeo and Juliet. The performance will be taking place from 19:30 and will run from Tuesday 31 October until Saturday 4 November. Guernsey Arts’ 2024 Bailiwick Wildlife Photography Exhibition: Submissions now open

Guernsey Arts are proud to announce that submissions are now open for the 2024 Bailiwick Wildlife Photography exhibition, supported this year by Guernsey Electricity’s Power to the People Fund. 

Now in its third year, local wildlife photographers have the chance to submit their most dynamic images of Bailiwick wildlife, from across Sark, Alderney, Herm and Guernsey, to feature in a large community exhibition.

Last year’s edition saw 60 photographers of all ages and skill levels taking part. Over 200 individual photos were submitted across the categories of Bird, Marine, Insect, Mammal, In Your Garden, including a number of photos by those aged 16 and under.

The categories for 2024 are: Birds, Insects, Marine, Bailiwick Animals, Patterns in Nature and Video & Film. There will be a prize given for each category as well as for the winner of the People’s Choice Award and a prize given for Young Bailiwick Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

Each year, a guest judge is chosen with a category specialisation – this year we will be causing a buzz with the intricate insect macro photography of Barry Wells.
