A TG Jones stores on a small, cobbled high street in Guernsey. It takes up two short fronts.

Retail workers in Guernsey are waiting to find out if their jobs are at risk, after a major UK retailer announced the closure of a string of stores nationwide.

TGJones – which took over WHSmith’s high street stores last year – announced the closures as part of cost-cutting measures, with national media reports suggesting up to 150 stores could close.

The retailer – which has a store on The Pollet, in St Peter Port – said the “restructuring” was vital to save the 234-year-old business.

A TGJones spokesperson said the decision had “not been taken lightly”, and blamed the closures on lower spending because of cost-of-living pressures, rising costs and losing the WHSmith name.

Express understands no decision on whether to close the Guernsey store has been taken yet.

The spokesperson said no decisions had “been taken on how this will impact roles, but we will aim to preserve as many jobs as possible”.

“Any potential store closures or role reductions will be subject to appropriate consultation, and we are committed to engaging openly and constructively with colleagues and their representatives,” they added.

The restructuring would help “create a stronger, more sustainable business”, they said.

However, the company recognised “the impact this uncertainty will have on colleagues, their families and the communities we serve”.
