Guernsey Ports has announced the island’s new Harbour Master – as well as Head of Guernsey Coastguard and Registrar of British Ships.

Guernsey-educated James Way spent his maritime career in the Royal Navy – as a Warfare Officer – and later as a Maritime Operations Controller for HM Coastguard.

His history with Guernsey Ports began 20 years ago as a seasonal marina attendant, before serving as Assistant Harbour Master in 2018 and then Head of Port Operations.

Mr Way said it was “an honour to be appointed as Harbour Master and to serve my island home”.

He added: “Guernsey’s harbours are at the heart of our community and our economy, and I am committed to ensuring they remain safe, efficient, and future-ready.

“I also look forward to leading Guernsey Coastguard and ensuring the safety and security of people and vessels using our waters and coastline for business and pleasure.”

Ross Coppolo, Guernsey Ports’ Managing Director, said Mr Way brought “a wealth of maritime expertise, strong operational leadership and a deep connection to the island”.

“His experience in the Royal Navy and HM Coastguard, combined with his proven capabilities within Guernsey Ports, makes him exceptionally well-placed to lead our harbour and marine operations.”

Mr Way will replace Jerome Davis, who has retired due to ill health.

Guernsey Ports said Mr Davis had “served with professionalism, integrity, and unwavering dedication” during his 11 years with the organisation.

He had been “fundamental in strengthening port operations, maritime safety, and resilience” and left “an enduring legacy”.

Mr Way said his predecessor was “an outstanding mentor and leader”, adding: “I want to pay personal tribute to his years of dedicated service.”
