The charity helps thousands of small animals each year, with the hedgehogs it is currently looking after among those taking up valuable space in its existing network of incubators.
GSPCA Manager, Steve Byrne said as the winter weather is often so mild in Guernsey hedgehogs rarely hibernate but some will struggle to stay awake to find food and shelter.
“We’re encouraging anyone to help provide hedgehogs habitat, shelter, food and fresh water. You can buy hedgehog food from most retailers but most cat and dog foods as long as they aren’t vegetarian are suitable, but NO milk or bread which was the traditional thing to put out, as it’s not good for them.”
Mr Byrne said busy times, like this last weekend, just reinforce the charity’s need to continually fundraise to provide much needed equipment for the animals of Guernsey.
“Anyone with any concerns please call us on 257261 or bring them in and we can check them over. It is exceptionally busy with 15 over the weekend and we desperately need new and additional intensive care units to help with the large numbers of sick, ill and some very young late in the season born hoglets.”
