This year’s theme will see the revival of pastimes from ‘Past Times’.

Visitors might even be challenged by characters from history who will be playing their favourite games including medieval backgammon, Tudor Nine Men’s Morris and the 17th century ‘stick game’.

Members of the Guernsey Military History Company will be showcasing the ‘downtime’ of garrison life in the castle, from listening to gramophone records to playing card games. For the first time at HistoryFest there will also be displays relating to the life of Victorian soldiers as well as First and Second World War servicemen and women.

HistoryFest 2019

Magic and face-painting will be on offer throughout the weekend with live ‘vintage’ or ‘traditional’ music and dancing as well as presentations from the Guernsey History in Action Company.

Access and Learning Manager Jo Dowding said the theme was inspired by a display at Guernsey Museum: “Our current Timewarp of Bakers Bazaar toy shop gave us the idea to focus on toys this year. The wonderful thing about games is that they are universal and enduring; playing games can connect us with people who lived long ago.”

Activities are open between 10:00 and 16:00 today and tomorrow. Normal admission charges apply and Discovery Pass holders can enter for free.
