Homecoming Day, held on 15 December each year, marks the day those living in Alderney returned to the island following the Second World War.

Since 2005, the date has been an annual public holiday.

At the moment, people in Alderney get the day off work unless it falls on a Saturday or Sunday, in which case they are given the preceding Monday as a bank holiday.

However, a new proposal is looking to change that.

The plans, which were tabled last month, request that 15 December becomes the official day for remembrance and that only this day is set aside for public holiday.

Policy & Finance are seeking the thoughts of the public before the topic goes before the full States for debate.

People in Alderney have four weeks to have their say by emailing ceo@alderney.gov.gg or writing a letter addressed to the Chief Executive, States of Alderney. All responses must be in by 6 March.
