Plans to turn the King Edward VII Hospital into a care home have taken a step forward after planning permission was granted to demolish a roadside building on the site.

One building on Rue de la Perruque, which was part of the original hospital that opened in 1902, can now be torn down to create a larger parking area and access to serve a future care home.

The States announced in June it would go into a partnership with CI Healthcare to redevelop the site into a 33-bed care home after years of the former hospital sitting dormant.

Planning said the building to be demolished was of “no architectural merit and so its removal is not considered to be of any great loss”.

The buildings removal will allow for new vehicle and pedestrian access to be create for 36 cars and four diabled bays.

The £5m private funded redevelopment of the site is planned for completion in 2027.

Additional planning permissions will be required for other elements of the project.

The site is likely to be included within an expanded development zone known as the L’Aumone Local Centre under ongoing reviews to the island’s planning laws.
