In a statement issued this morning, the French ferry company said that its “thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family at this difficult time”.

It added that it was working closely with the authorities to investigate the circumstances and causes of the incident.

According to the Manches Iles Express timetable, a ferry was due to arrive from Granville mid-morning and depart for Sark at 10:50.

Police officers have since confirmed that they were called to Victoria Pier at 03:26 “to reports of a man in the water in the harbour”.

They added: “On arrival the man had been pulled out of the water by crew members of the Manche Iles Express. Ambulance crew also attended and transported the man to hospital but he sadly passed away a short time later. Another man who entered the water to help was also treated at hospital but was released soon after.”

A spokesperson for Ports of Jersey commented: “We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased Manche Iles Express crew member, following this sad incident. We would also like to express our sympathy for his fellow Manche Iles crew members.

“There are ongoing enquiries underway to try to determine the cause of the incident.”

The incident is now under investigation and a file is being prepared for the Deputy Viscount.
