On ‘Time to Talk Day’, Mind is offering people the opportunity to take a moment for a chat – either now or at another time.

The national initiative aims to inspire the nation’s most significant mental health conversation between friends, families, communities, and workplaces.

Marking it locally, Guernsey Mind and the Channel Islands Coop will be joining forces on Thursday 6 February.

There’ll be information stands at the Grandes Marchés in St Sampson’s and St Martin’s with hints, tips, and giveaways from both to encourage people to enjoy a cuppa and a chat.

Amanda Hibbs, Communications and Events Lead for Guernsey Mind, said they want to highlight the importance of openness.

“It’s not always easy for people to talk,” she said. “However, speaking openly and honestly can be the first step towards better mental health.

“Sharing personal feelings may initially feel uncomfortable, but it can help others understand how your feelings are impacting your life.”

Guernsey Mind has offered tips ahead of ‘Time to Talk Day’ saying there are numerous ways to initiate a conversation.

This can include chatting during an activity, sharing a cuppa with a loved one, or texting a friend.

While some people find it easier to talk over the phone or write down their feelings others will prefer talking in person.

Listening is just as important as talking, added Guernsey Mind.

“Providing full attention, putting away phones, and choosing a quiet place to chat can make a significant difference”.

The way you ask questions is also important said the charity.

“Asking open, non-judgmental questions like ‘How does that affect you?’ or ‘What does it feel like?’ can encourage meaningful dialogue.

“It’s important to remember that solving problems isn’t always necessary; simply talking can be powerful. Unless someone asks for advice directly, just being there to listen is often the best approach.”

Initiating conversations can be as simple as offering to make someone a drink, added Guernsey Mind.

“Even small gestures can have a substantial impact—offering a cup of tea and a chat can turn a bad day into a better one for a friend or a colleague. Time to Talk Day presents an opportunity for everyone to be more open about mental health, start conversations, listen, and even transform lives.
