These findings could lead to the possible pedestrianisation of the lower half of Victoria Street.

The island’s General Services Committee is currently working through the findings of a traffic management survey which was conducted in April.

It has now tasked the Traffic Working Group to develop recommendations based on the findings.

“The survey was intended not only to help us understand traffic issues, but also to obtain objective data on the number of licences and vehicles per household, in order to understand where the most congested areas are,” said GSC Chair, Lin Maurice.

“We also received a small number of responses suggesting the pedestrianisation of Victoria Street together with a separate proposal from the Chamber of Commerce, so we are also exploring this option. This is not a proposal to pedestrianise Victoria Street altogether, but to review potential times for closure of the lower part, for example on Saturday mornings which would create a pleasant environment for residents and visitors when they can enjoy a better shopping experience.”
