A new housing development at the Bridge could move a step closer, if planning permission is given to demolish several empty buildings and improve access roads to the site.

Starting development at Leale’s Yard is one of the States’ ‘super priorities’ this term, with hundreds of new homes planned.

Several buildings on the site, behind the Bridge, already have planning permission to be demolished, but Policy and Resources said demolishing all the buildings at the same time would “deliver better value for money”.

As well as clearing the site and putting in a new entrance for construction vehicles, the proposals include adding a new pedestrian crossing and moving a nearby bus stop.

Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez, President of Policy and Resources, said the States was creating a “master plan” so Leale’s Yard and the nearby Saltpans and Parc Le Lacheur sites could be “developed cohesively”.

The master plan would ensure “everything fits together properly and works well for the wider area and the community as a whole”, she added.

The plans can be found online.

The States bought Leale’s Yard last July for £4.5m from the Channel Islands Coop and had originally planned to clear the site within 12 months – however this now seems unlikely.
