One of Guernsey’s longest running and most popular and successful fundraising events marks its golden anniversary this year.

The 50th edition of the swimarathon will take place in October, with the money raised going to Les Bourgs Hospice.

Supported by Skipton, money raised through this year’s event will aim to make a dent in the £2.8m running costs that the charity has to find every year.

The Chair of the Skipton Swimarathon Organising Committee has outlined his hopes for this autumn’s fundraiser, which is also looking to raise awareness, as well some crucial cash for the much-loved local charity.

“We are very pleased to name Les Bourgs Hospice as the main beneficiary for the 2026 Skipton Swimarathon,” said John Stuart. “In this special 50th anniversary year, it feels particularly fitting to support an organisation that means so much to our community.

” Skipton Swimarathon has always been about people coming together behind a shared cause, and we hope this year’s event will help raise both funds and awareness for the vital support the hospice provides.”

Last year’s Skipton Swimarathon showed just how well respected the event is, and what a good job it does in raising vital funds for charities and causes which touch every life in Guernsey.

In total £68,500 was raised by those taking part in the 2025 event, with the main beneficiary last year being St John Guernsey LBG.

A number of other charities also benefitted from the 2025 event.

Pete Turner, the Chief Operating Officer at Skipton International, said they’re hoping to be as successful with this year’s swimarathon.

“We are proud to continue supporting the Skipton Swimarathon in its 50th year and to help shine a light on the important work of Les Bourgs Hospice.

“The event reflects the best of Guernsey’s community spirit, bringing together individuals, families, schools and businesses in a way that is inclusive, positive and purposeful.”

The 50th edition of the Skipton Swimarathon lines up nicely with Les Bourgs own anniversary, with 2026 marking 35 years of serving the community.

Rob Jones, the Chief Executive Officer at Les Bourgs Hospice, said the raising of both funds and awareness remains crucial for the charity.

“We are honoured to have been chosen as the main beneficiary for the 2026 Skipton Swimarathon. This support will help us continue providing compassionate care to people with complex needs, while also supporting their families through what can often be very difficult times.

“It is also an opportunity to help more people understand the wider role hospice care can play in supporting dignity, comfort and wellbeing.”
