The Medical Specialist Group has launched its annual bursary to support Bailiwick residents heading to UK medical schools this autumn.
The scheme provides a grant of £2,000 per year for up to five years to assist with educational and living costs.
Recipients must be a Bailiwick resident starting a UK medical degree this year, and they have to agree to complete 20 weeks working at the MSG during their studies, write a 1,000-word essay detailing their career goals, and explain their intended use of the funds.
“As an organisation at the heart of healthcare, we are committed to supporting students who are passionate about a career in medicine,” said Chair of the MSG, Dr Michelle Le Cheminant.
“As a small community, we value the opportunity to encourage local talent and help nurture the next generation of doctors, some of whom may one day return to the island to deliver high-quality care for us and our loved ones.”
Last year’s bursary was awarded to Aron Thomassen, who is now studying at King’s College London.
“The MSG bursary has been a fantastic support during my first year,” he said. “Having that financial weight lifted has given me the freedom to dedicate time to the things I’m passionate about in my free time, whether that be exploring research opportunities, starting new hobbies or developing projects alongside my studies.
“I’d encourage anyone considering medicine to apply, as this support has truly enriched my university experience and has allowed me to make the most of every opportunity.”
Dr Le Cheminant said the bursary scheme can really make a difference for students so she is encouraging entries again this year.
“It is incredibly rewarding to hear from previous bursary recipients about the difference this support has made. Aron was an outstanding applicant and a very deserving winner. We look forward to receiving another strong pool of applicants this year.”
Applications are open until the end of next month with interviews in early July for shortlisted candidates. The MSG says to contact Nathan Collenette to apply.
