The number of bikes stolen has risen over the last few months, according to police.
Guernsey Police say that they have seen an increase in E-bike and bike thefts over the recent months – including at the summer shows – so are sharing some advice on how people can keep their bikes safe.
The worrying trend comes after a children’s ‘balance bike library’ was vandalised, earlier this month, forcing it to be moved.
How to keep your bike safe
While many members the public would argue bike thieves should be locked up, Guernsey Police’s advice is to lock the bike up with a good-quality lock to stop it being stolen in the first place.
If you’re parking your bike at home, take it inside or make sure it’s somewhere out of sight and locked up.
A good bike deserves to be protected by a lock worth its value. Thieves can easily notice a cheap lock and find ways to break it, so spending extra to avoid this will never be a waste of money. See Guernsey Police’s recommended list of bike locks HERE.
You shouldn’t take your bike anywhere unless you have a lock with you, so check it’s there before you set off on your journey.
Make sure you have a picture of your bike in case it gets stolen in future – this helps us and the community keep an eye out for it.
“Of course, the blame does not lie with the victim when a bike is stolen, but being vigilant and considering these steps can help reduce the chance of it being taken at all,” Guernsey Police added.
