In a week where street art has claimed many of the headlines, a musical talent has taken a huge step in their own creative passions, releasing his debut album.
Mickey Haimes published ‘Waving in the Mirror’ on Tuesday – with it available on online platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and TikTok.
The folk artist is already a regular face and sound at pubs, restaurants, local events, and venues centred around Guernsey’s night-time economy, but now he’s looking to leave his mark permanently with his album, which he describes as “a collection of raw, witty and candid tales of a 20-something navigating life in the modern world”.
The EP features a collage of moments from throughout Mickey’s musical career so far, including his debut single, and former BBC Introducing ‘Track of the Week’ ‘Sunlight’s Exposure’. It is one of two tracks produced by Mikey Ferbrache at Apocalypse Studios, who also contributed to the arrangements.
Mickey worked with producer Flexagon for the rest of ‘Waving in the Mirror’, which includes collaborations with fellow Guernsey musicians Pip Orchard (double bass) and Emma Lancaster (viola and vocal harmonies), as well as a stripped back, single-take recording of the first song Mickey ever wrote, ‘Slippers Not Soles’.
“It’s a culmination of years of messing around on my guitar trying to get things out of my head and into a way I can make sense of them,” said Mickey.
“I’m grateful to have found music and to live in a place with such a diverse and welcoming local scene. I’m delighted to get my songs out there with this project – it’s been a dream of mine for a while.”
As well as working with fellow musical creatives on his sound, Mickey enlisted the help of other local talents for his debut album.
The artwork for ‘Waving in the Mirror’ was painted by established Guernsey artist Rob Sweeney, with photography from Caroline Barby.
