Permission has been given for a funeral parlour to open in a residential area in St Peter Port, despite some neighbours raising concerns about the plan.

Serenity Funeral Services will be based at Jamaica Hall in Le Bouet after planning permission was granted earlier this week.

The company had asked for a change of use of the ground floor of the building, which has been allowed.

The Development and Planning Authority (DPA) said it is already a mixed use area, and adding a funeral parlour doesn’t conflict with the aims of the Island Development Plan.

The DPA also said “the impact on neighbours is acceptable”.

That’s despite nine letters of opposition being sent in with residents suggesting a variety of problems including a narrow access lane to the site and a lack of general parking and no disabled parking.

Some also said noise from the nearby pub would be “incompatible” and that a “more discreet location” should be considered.

Other were worried there would be a health risk from handling and transferring dead bodies and from toxic fumes and odours.

The Office of Environmental Health and Pollution Regulation and the Health and Safety Executive both said they had no issues with the application.
