Retiring Deputy Peter Roffey is hoping that the new States will try to work together collegiately from the outset.

Reflecting on the election results, he told Express that he sees the new States as a “slightly more progressive and liberal States that we’ve seen over the last couple of terms” and he thinks he would have enjoyed working with some of the new members.

He doesn’t regret his decision to stand down though.

“I think I probably would have enjoyed this States, but nevertheless, you’re not doing it on the basis of that. I thought it was the right time, after the last nine years going absolutely flat out to at least take a break, probably a permanent break, but at least a break of sorts. So yes, there is a side of me that looks at the results and said ‘oh, that would have been quite interesting’, but who knows, I may not have got in as quite a few sitting deputies didn’t.”

Current Deputy Simon Vermuelen is one of those returning to the States for another four years.

He’s also hopeful that they can work better together this time round.

“I think the public have voted for change. There’s a lot of new faces, which I’ve made a point of getting to know before they were successful. We’ve got a really high calibre of States Members, so there’s no excuses this time.”

He added that “we’re going to work collaboratively”.

“We’re all going to work together. We’re all pulling in the same direction for the greater good of Guernsey and support the public.”

The poll topper in this election also seems determined to have the new States working better together than it did during the 2020-25 term.

Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez said it’s all about finding the best roles for people.

“I do think as a general rule, and this goes for any positions, I think it is important to understand where people’s skills lie and try to find the best possible matches.

“I know a number of people have declared their interest in various positions. I’m interested in all sorts of things, but I think I do need to sit down with the list and a cup of tea and have a proper, proper think.

“I think the conversations over the next few days will be really, really important in understanding where people’s interests and their strengths lie. So I think that’s what it’s about. It’s finding the best fit for people.”
