Discarded fishing hooks caught in mooring lines are injuring port workers and endangering wildlife, according to Guernsey Harbours.
The authority said it has received several reports of fishing hooks and lures becoming stuck in commercial vessel mooring lines, particularly on the Fish Quay.
It also noted an increase in fishing line being discarded on the quays.
The authority warned that the discarded gear poses a risk both to people and wildlife.
“This discarded gear represents a risk to commercial vessel crews who get the hooks stuck in their hands and also to local wildlife,” Guernsey Harbours said.
Anglers are being asked to ensure all fishing equipment is taken home after use. Guernsey Harbours also urged anyone whose hooks or lures become tangled in mooring lines not to try to remove them themselves.
“We politely ask that anglers ensure that all of their gear is taken home with them, or if hooks/lures become entangled in mooring lines, then please call Guernsey VTS on 01481 220675 and Ports staff will ensure such gear is removed safely,” the authority said.
