The portacabin that houses the departure lounge at Alderney Airport will be replaced with a brand new one with double the capacity, if planners agree to the proposals.

Guernsey Ports has asked for planning permission to replace the current cabin, saying it is at the end of its useful life.

Ports also wants to put in a covered link between the terminal building and the new departures cabin, and upgrade disabled access through a new walkway to the apron.

It is proposed that the current departures cabin, which is 12.19m² (2.3 metres x 5.3 metres), will be replaced with a larger cabin, of 28.89m² (6.1m x 4.9m).

After clearing security, passengers proceed to the departures cabin to receive a safety briefing and wait to board their flight. The proposed larger space is intended to better accommodate those departing passengers.

“The current departures cabin has been in place for more than 15 years and needs to be replaced with a similar construction prior to any major works at the airport,” said Programme Manager, Susanna Durman.

“It also presents an opportunity to carry out some improvements to disabled access through departures. Subject to planning permission, the intention is to carry out replacements works early summer.”
