During Thursday 11 April, technical staff were working on the wider project to upgrade the police IT systems.

That meant they needed to operate a controlled shutdown of certain IT systems and some parts of the building’s power supply.

That work in turn allowed the technical staff to complete some of their work focused on improving resilience in the building.

All of the work was completed within the day, as planned, with no impact on the day-to-day operation of any Bailiwick Law Enforcement duties.

Contingency plans were in place, and members of the public may have noticed uniformed staff manning the police stations entry points to maintain site security, but there was no other reason for this other than as part of the IT upgrading work.

The ongoing IT transformation work is taking place across the BLE estate and followed concerns raised internally and externally about the dated systems staff were using.

An external report in 2018 found that the BLE ICT provision “was among the worst we have seen”. 

More than £3million was then invested in upgrades to the systems used with further investments made more recently as part of wider work to safeguard operations.
