What’s happened so far?
In March 2016, the States voted to abolish selection at 11. Later in the year, after the May 2016 General Election, the current States reaffirmed that decision.
At the beginning of 2018, the States voted against the previous Education, Sport & Culture’s three-school proposals in favour of a system put forward by the ‘gang of four’ for one 11-18 school split over two sites.
Following that vote, the previous committee resigned and was replaced by those behind the alternative model. Under their plans, the four existing secondary schools will close and be replaced by two 11 to 18 colleges, both of which will have sixth forms.
Education wants to use the St Sampson’s and Les Beaucamps buildings for these larger schools.
They have also proposed creating a purpose-built facility integrating the College of Further Education, The Institute of Health and Social Care Studies and the GTA University at Les Ozouets and the redevelopment of La Mare de Carteret Primary School. Le Murier and Les Voies School will continue to provide special needs education.
Education has said it will publish the full costings in a policy letter that it will put before the States this summer for final approval. If successful, President Deputy Matt Fallaize has told parents and students that the changes will be fully operational by September 2023.
