Parcels shipments to the United States have been temporarily suspended by Guernsey Post after the White House removed a duty free exemption for goods entering the country.
GPL said the change has been made with immediate effect – and that it doesn’t affect letters or documents.
“Due to the uncertainty surrounding how these duties will be collected and what additional information may be required, Guernsey Post has made the decision to pause postal services for goods to the U.S,” it said in a statement.
“This measure is being taken to protect customers from potential delays, unexpected charges, or rejected shipments.”
US President Donald Trump signed an order at the end of July which pauses the de minimis exemption for duty paid on goods entering the country which are valued under $800.
It is part of sweeping customs changes made by the American administration under the guise of national security and protection of the economy.
Those changes to customs rules will come into force on Friday 29 August.
Other European postal organisations have also suspended the shipping of goods due to the uncertainty.
Guernsey Post said it is working with Royal Mail and others to find a workaround to the new regulations.
It said local firms with commercial shipping requirements will be contacted directly and informed about alternatives such as FedEx.
