green ribbon schools protest
Protesters will march from North Beach to Market Square on Sunday afternoon.

The event follows on from an online petition against Education, Sport & Culture’s proposals, which has tallied up more than 5,000 signatures so far.  Some Guernsey people have also taken to putting green ribbons up on their cars or outside their homes in protest against the plans, while supporting calls for the States to ‘pause and review’.

It has been set up by the newly formed People Power Guernsey group, which described itself as being made up of “concerned individuals” who wish to speak against the plans.

“Individuals are encouraged to bring their own placards and make signs for the walk,” a spokesperson from People Power Guernsey said. “We are also encouraging individuals to wear bright colours, high visibility jackets and display green ribbons where appropriate.

“It is really important that people attend the march if they feel strongly against the plans. It is only by illustrating people power that the States will have to take notice and things may change.”

Guernsey Police are aware of the planned march and relevant marshals will attend.

It will begin at North Beach at 14:00 and is expected to last around 45 minutes.
