Queens Road Medical Practice staff, including doctors, nurses, and administrative personnel, have completed Dementia Awareness training, aiming to highlight the practice’s commitment to supporting individuals living with dementia.

The training looks to create a more dementia-friendly environment in Guernsey by enhancing understanding and changing perceptions of the condition, and focuses on five major takeaways.

These state that Dementia is not a natural part of ageing, it’s caused by diseases of the brain, and it involves more than just memory loss.

The final two messages state that it’s possible to live well with dementia, and that a person is more than their diagnosis.

Practice Manager, Rob Jordan emphasised the importance of continuous team development to provide compassionate and informed care.

“Dementia is a disease that impacts many people in our community, making it essential for our staff to deepen their understanding of the disease.

“By increasing our awareness, we can provide the highest level of compassionate care to those affected and their families.”

More than 1,200 people live with the disease in Guernsey, with Julie Bulpitt, the Dementia Friendly Guernsey Co-ordinator, noting the significance of training medical practice staff.

“Delivering dementia awareness sessions to staff at the Queens Road Medical Practice was important, as they come into contact daily with people living with dementia.

“The staff will now have a better understanding of the condition and be able to help those with dementia, their families, and friends as the condition affects them all.”
