There are currently vacancies for 4.5 full time equivalent nurses and the States of Guernsey is advertising posts in the Nursing Times, which claims to be the most-visited nursing website in Europe.

Under the 1948 Agreement, healthcare is a transferred service, which means it is provided to Alderney by Guernsey in return for Guernsey collecting taxes from Alderney.

The Committee for Health & Social Care said the number of vacancies currently “is consistent with staffing in Alderney, which is a unique nursing opportunity but not without challenges from a recruitment perspective”.

“We’ve had a couple of nurses resign recently and therefore have taken the opportunity to advertise in the Nursing Times really to sell Alderney and the benefits of living and working there,” said the Committee.

“We hope this latest recruitment push will be successful, but we generally run with a vacancy factor of three to five nurses in Alderney.”

Band five staff nurses with post-registration experience are wanted to work at the Mignot Memorial Hospital and with patients in the community.

The salary offered is between £26,404 and £34,173.

Anyone interested in the vacancies can find out more information on the States’ website.

In the Nursing Times, Alderney is described as offering “a relaxed way of life, in a safe environment, where quality time is easy to find and where a beach or stunning cliff top view is at the end of every road and path…[and] a great selection of places to eat, a fascinating history and unique wildlife and birdlife”.

Applicants for the posts are offered “not just a change of pace – it’s a new way of life”.

The Committee has already recruited one new nurse who will be starting in Alderney in the New Year and is interviewing for a new ward sister next week.

Vacancies for permanent posts are typically filled temporarily by agency nurses.

There are currently 10 registered nurses employed in Alderney.
