After two breaches in just over 24-hours, a review of Guernsey Airport’s security measures is now taking place.
Someone first got on to the aerodrome before the airport had opened on Saturday morning. The same person is understood to have again gained access to the aerodrome on Sunday morning at around 09:45.
Both times the access was described as “illegal” and Guernsey Police were called and arrested the person.
Police investigations are ongoing as are the airport’s enquiries.
Airport Director Richard Thomasson said that includes a full review in conjunction with Guernsey Police and the aviation security regulator, to assess whether additional security arrangements were necessary.
“We have well-established aviation security arrangements and procedures, which are regularly tested to deal with such incidents,” he said. “As a result, on both occasions, the individual was proactively intercepted and detained and were then handed over to Guernsey Police.
“Our operational teams worked closely with our airline partners to ensure minimum disruption to services.
“However, the safety and security of all users of Guernsey Airport will always be our number one priority. We take such incidents very seriously, and we will be conducting a full review of our existing security arrangements in consultation with Guernsey Police and our aviation security regulator.”
As the airport was already open when the individual was caught on the airfield on Sunday morning, flights had to be suspended while the situation was dealt with.
An inbound Aurigny flight from Gatwick that was due to land held overhead for around 10 minutes, but no other services were affected, and Guernsey Airport reopened shortly after 10:00.
Saturday’s incident caused some minor delays to the first departures of the day.
