The politician will stay on as a Member of the States of Alderney, continuing to represent constituents in the island, but has chosen to relinquish his more senior role which would have put more pressure on his time over the coming months.
Mr Jean was due to cover as President of the States of Alderney from the end of this month, when the current post holder Stuart Trought steps down, until the newly elected incumbent was due to take on the four year seat in June.
Mr Jean has written to Mr Trought saying it was “with regret” that he was offering his resignation, but he explained he would have “considerable difficulty” meeting the demands of the post, in particular the off-island travel needed, as his family commitments are expected to increase over the next month or so.
The States of Alderney meet tonight and a new Vice President is expected to be elected. The Presidential elections are then due to take place on June 22.
