Shaun Crosier, 34, who has repeatedly driven while under the influence of alcohol, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday and left the Court headed for a six-month stretch in Les Nicolles.

The Court was told that Crosier was also taken off the roads in 2008 for drink driving and disqualified in 2018 for failing to provide a breath sample.

Just before midnight on 7 November last year, witnesses indoors in Pedvin Street and Hauteville heard a loud bang outside.

After going outside, one of the witnesses saw that their car had been hit and a white Citroen was leaving the scene. Moments later, it came back up Pedvin Street and mounted the pavement to avoid being stopped by the witnesses.

Police were called and conducted a search. They found the car in a nearby car park and shone a light on a person locking it.

The person, later identified as Crosier, ran away but was discovered on Church Steps behind a gate.

Police arrested Crosier after the car’s registration was traced back to his partner.

Crosier had been disqualified from driving in 2018 and was still not allowed to be on the roads.

He pleaded guilty to driving without permission of the owner of the car, driving without insurance, driving while disqualified and failing to report an accident.

Additionally, Crosier blew three times the legal limit – 109 micrograms in breath – and was charged and pleaded guilty to drink driving.

While being interviewed, Crosier said he had drunk four beers and a bottle of wine and could not remember anything until he was in custody.

He was released on bail. But he was then remanded in custody until sentencing after he was found at Guernsey Airport with a one-way ticket and bags which according to the prosecution were “excessive for a three-day trip”.

Defence Advocate Sam Steele said Crosier was apologetic and thankful that no one had been hurt.

He also said Crosier had begun working on his drink problem and that the five-week spell on remand had “dried him out”.

Judge Graeme McKerrell was unimpressed:

“If you don’t recall driving… it serves to demonstrate the level of intoxication you were under,” he said.

Crosier was sentenced to six months in Les Nicolles and banned from driving for seven years.
