Students at Guernsey’s Sixth Form Centre are ‘wheelie’ looking forward to speaking to deputies about active travel, at an event this week.
A ‘spokes’-person said a student-led team is working with teachers to encourage the States to champion more active travel policies and improved transport infrastructure.
Wednesday’s event is open to students, school staff, parents and carers from across the island, and will run from 16:30 to 17:30.
Sixth form student and Island Games sailor Monty Desforges is one the group’s leaders, and said the States should prioritise student health and activity.
The Sixth Form has students from across the island, so its private bus service is unable to pick every one if them up – meaning many travel in themselves.
At the moment, many students drive cars or ride in on mopeds, creating unnecessary emissions on an island where everything is so close together.
While many similar initiatives have been launched across the island, few focus on the practicalities of student life.
Long-time active travel advocate, Deputy Ross Le Brun said the event would be “the largest youth-led political demonstration Guernsey has seen”.
“These young people are our future voters, leaders and decision-makers, and they deserve to know that we want to listen,” he added.
