A survey has found that staff in States’ schools across the Bailiwick feel significantly more supported, listened to, and confident than in classrooms elsewhere in the British Isles.

Staff at fourteen primary and secondary schools took part in the latest SchoolSurveys research.

In every single area surveyed the Guernsey average was said to be significantly higher than in comparable settings elsewhere.

Director of Education, Nick Hynes said the results speak volumes about leadership within our school settings.

“It is great that these results verify what Ofsted, our external inspector, is telling us about the high quality of leadership and management in our schools.

“Staff wellbeing and trust in leadership are essential for thriving schools and these figures paint a positive picture of Guernsey’s educational leadership culture.”

Some of the standout results from the local research included 88% of respondents saying that “leadership is visible” in Bailiwick schools, and 87% saying they “feel supported” by their school’s leadership team.

91% also said they “have confidence in decisions made by leaders” in their school.

78% agreed that “their line manager actively helps them to do a better job” and 92% said “their line manager supports them”.

Vicky Godley, Principal at St Sampson’s High School, said she was pleased with the survey results.

“For me personally this is representative of the journey of improvement we’ve been on as a team of staff at St Sampson’s. I am particularly pleased that the results reflect good leadership at all levels, and that staff are on board with our vision and are part of the journey.”

Tom Whitmore is a Parent Governor for St Sampson’s High School.

He praised Ms Godley and her leadership team for their work at the school.

“I have been able to see firsthand the strength of senior leadership at the school, and it has been a privilege to begin to build a strong relationship with the school,” he said.

“As governors, we are looking forward to even greater improvements and recognise the strides forward already achieved by Vicky and her team.”
