Following the States approval of a new model of education governance, the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture is looking to recruit eight new Chairs for its Education Governance Boards.

The Chairs will play an important role in the States education system by both managing and directing the work of the Governance Board and working closely with headteachers and principals of States-maintained schools.

They will meet three times each year to provide collective support and challenge to the frontline leaders of each of the States-maintained education providers in Guernsey, including The Guernsey Institute, and St Anne’s School in Alderney.  These meetings take approximately 2-3 hours (agenda dependent).

Earlier this political term, ESC set up Interim Governance Boards, which will transition into full Governance Boards in early 2026 in line with the updated Education Law.

The eight appointed Chairs will then play a crucial role in the future of this model. ESC say the leadership roles offer a “unique opportunity to shape the future of education in the islands of Guernsey and Alderney.”

Roles and responsibilities of the Education Governance Board Chairs will include:

  • Providing strategic leadership to their Board and facilitating effective meetings.
  • Supporting and challenging school leaders to ensure excellence in education.
  • Working closely with headteachers/principals, and The Guernsey Institute to drive
    positive change.
  • Helping foster strong community engagement by collaborating with parents, staff
    and local representatives.

Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen, President of the Committee for ESC said: “This is a seminal moment for education in Guernsey and we have already successfully onboarded parent, staff and community voices to provide support and challenge to settings leaders. Even at this early stage, we are seeing the benefits of their involvement, both through their support and independent scrutiny of our schools and The Guernsey Institute.”

The eight Chair positions which are to be recruited, will be at the following:

  • St Anne’s School, Alderney
  • North & West Primary cluster (Hautes Capelles Primary School, Le Mare De Carteret
    Primary School, Vale Primary School).
  • South & West Primary cluster (Castel Primary School, Forest Primary School, La
